Kid friendliness :

I have noticed the following when people are faced with a strange-kid-in-two-feet-proximity. Some people, prefer to ignore the existence of the child, and stare past the baby, and also the adult who carries the baby. When the child is persistent about attention, they smile about a millimeter and run for their dear life.. (remember monster's inc).

There are others, who like to play with kids, but from a distance. They make funny faces, noises, but avoid the child as if touching would contaminate them.

Then there are the I like kids, but don't know what makes them smile. They usually see a child, and think, hmm.. cute baby.. will she laugh if I tell her the latest joke from reader's digest? They really want to be able to entertain the child, just don't know how.

And then there are the i-love-kids-poopy-messy-goey-bring-em-on. They run towards an adult with a child (mostly new moms, new grandmoms and college girls). They grab the child making cooing sounds, playing, laughing, giggling. They usually can entertain kids for hours and would rather play with the kid, then make a conversation with the adult.

I used to be kid unfriendly before I had my daughter. I still don't know how to handle somebody else's child. I feel like a fool making funny faces and noises. And yet I am a mother... go figure.
